Every printer eventually receives a PDF that was exported at exactly its finished size — no bleed, no margin to trim into. If you still have the source file, the fix is easy: extend the artwork in the design app and re-export. But plenty of the time you only have the flattened PDF itself: a client sent it, the source file is on a machine you no longer have access to, or it came out of a tool that never offered a bleed option in the first place. In that situation you need to manufacture bleed from a page that was never designed with any. Why a finished PDF has no bleed to begin with
Bleed is not something a PDF acquires automatically — it has to be built in at export time. Most design tools only add it if the document was set up with bleed guides from the first page, and a lot of everyday design work never gets that far. A one-off flyer knocked together in a general-purpose editor, a business card exported from a template site, or a PDF that started life as a Word document typically has its artwork stop exactly at the page boundary. The file is technically complete — it opens, it prints, it looks correct on screen — but nothing in it extends past the line the printer intends to cut along.
That distinction matters because bleed is not the same thing as extra canvas. A page can be physically larger than its trim size and still have zero bleed, if the area outside the trim line is blank. What a printer needs is printed content continuing past that line, so that whichever way the cutting blade drifts, it slices through ink rather than through unprinted stock. When a finished PDF lacks that, extending the page with white space does not solve anything — the existing background, photo, or colour has to keep going outward, which is exactly what mirror, repeat, and scale each try to accomplish in different ways.
Method 1: Mirror — reflecting the edge outward
The mirror method takes a strip of content just inside the trim line, flips it across that line, and places the reflection into the new bleed area. If your bleed is 3mm, it samples the innermost 3mm of existing artwork and mirrors it 3mm outward. Because the mirrored strip is built from real pixels that were already part of your design — not invented or duplicated from further away — colour, texture, and grain carry through almost seamlessly on backgrounds that do not have sharp detail sitting right at the edge.
This is why mirror is the default recommendation in BleedMaker for nearly every job: photo backgrounds, gradients, textured papers, and soft-focus edges all reflect convincingly. A cutting blade that drifts a fraction of a millimetre into a mirrored strip reveals more of the same continuous-looking material, not an obvious seam. The one thing mirror cannot do is invent detail that never existed — it can only fold what is already at the edge back on itself, so a design with genuinely blank space near the border extends far more convincingly than one with fine detail hard against the trim line.
Method 2: Repeat — stretching the outermost pixels
The repeat method (sometimes called pixel-extend or edge-stretch) works differently: instead of reflecting a strip, it samples only the very last row or column of pixels along an edge and stretches or tiles that single line outward until it fills the bleed area. On a page with a flat colour background or a very gentle gradient running parallel to the edge, this produces a clean, uniform result almost indistinguishable from mirror — because there was no detail to reflect or lose in the first place.
Where repeat struggles is anything with variation close to the edge. Because it is extending a single line rather than a strip, any texture, pattern, or gradient that changes direction near the border gets stretched into streaks running straight out from the trim line. A subtle paper-grain texture can start to look like scan lines; a diagonal pattern can look torn rather than continued. Reach for repeat when you already know the edge is genuinely flat — a solid brand colour, a plain white or black background — where its speed and predictability outweigh mirror's slight edge in fidelity.
Method 3: Scale — usually the wrong move
Scaling solves the missing-bleed problem by a different route entirely: instead of extending the artwork, it shrinks the whole page by a small percentage and centers the smaller result inside the original page boundary, treating the new empty ring as bleed. It technically satisfies the requirement that the PDF page is larger than the trim size. It does not satisfy the actual purpose of bleed, because the new margin is unprinted white space, not printed content — a blade that drifts into it still exposes bare stock, which is the exact failure bleed exists to prevent.
Scaling also changes the design itself. Every element on the page — logo, text, margins, borders — shrinks by the same factor, which can push text closer to the new trim line than intended, throw off alignment with a die-cut template, or break registration with facing pages in a booklet. It is worth keeping in the toolkit only for informal jobs where a barely perceptible size change genuinely does not matter, and only when mirror and repeat are both unsuitable — for example, a page where the edge content is pure white already, so there is nothing to gain from either extension method anyway.

When bleed extension breaks down regardless of method
No algorithm — mirror, repeat, or otherwise — can invent artwork that was never there. A few situations push every extension method toward a visibly wrong result, and it helps to recognize them before you run the tool rather than after you have already submitted the file.
Text or logos sitting right at the trim line. If a headline or logo mark touches the edge of the page, mirroring or repeating it produces a duplicated or stretched fragment of that text in the bleed zone. The trimmer should cut most of it away, but if the cut lands even slightly off, a strange partial word or smeared letterform can show at the edge. The real fix here is to nudge that text inward before extending bleed, not to rely on the extension algorithm to hide it.
Photographs with a defined subject at the border. A face, a product edge, or a straight horizon line positioned right at the trim looks fine in the original file but produces an obviously duplicated (mirror) or smeared (repeat) copy once extended. Photos with soft, out-of-focus, or texture-only content near the edge extend far better than photos with a hard subject boundary there.
Thin borders or frames. A decorative rule placed close to the trim line extends into a second, fainter rule in the bleed zone under either method, which can look like a printing defect if the cut lands inside the bleed area rather than exactly on the trim line. Borders are usually better handled by extending them well past the bleed edge in the original design, or avoiding them near the trim entirely.
In each of these cases, the honest fix is going back to the source file if you have one. When you do not, extension is still usually better than submitting a file with no bleed at all — a slightly imperfect mirrored edge that gets trimmed away is a smaller risk than a guaranteed white sliver on every copy.

What is the difference between the mirror and repeat bleed methods?
