Artwork beyond the trim

Add bleed to an existing PDF. Give the cut some room.

Prepare edge-to-edge artwork for trimming. Choose a bleed amount in PDFImpose, compare mirrored edges with page enlargement, and inspect the repaired edge before export.

PRINT
TO THE EDGE
  • Artwork extends into bleed
  • Trim is the finished size
  • Keep text inside the safe area
THE QUICK ANSWER

Bleed is artwork, not an empty border.

Bleed extends printed artwork outside the final trim line so small cutting variation is less likely to reveal unprinted paper. The safe area sits inside trim and protects text. Crop marks indicate a cut. These three elements have different jobs; changing a PDF boundary alone does not create missing artwork.

A CLEAR PATH TO PRINT

Good output starts
with the right setup.

Understand the layout, check the details, then take your file into PDFImpose.

01

Find the intended trim

Check the finished dimensions and whether the PDF already has bleed. Use the printer's required amount instead of assuming a universal value.

02

Choose how to extend the edge

Open Add bleed in PDFImpose. Mirroring reflects nearby edge content; enlargement changes the artwork's scale. Compare their effect on your particular design.

03

Inspect the corners and text

Zoom into every type of edge in the output. Look for repeated details, clipped content or a visible seam, then confirm page dimensions before printing.

THINK BEYOND THE SCREEN

Designed on a screen.
Made for paper.

When the design file is unavailable, inspect whether a generated extension can make the existing PDF suitable for the job.

⊞

A measurable page boundary

Calculate the expected dimensions from the trim and per-side allowance, then check the output against that target.

A method chosen for the artwork

Simple backgrounds and detailed edge imagery react differently to mirroring or enlargement. The preview gives you a place to judge the result.

Your pre-print checklist
THE DETAILS, MADE TANGIBLE

What 3 mm of bleed adds to an A5 page.

Assume a 148 × 210 mm finished page and exactly 3 mm of bleed on all four sides. Additional waste for marks is excluded.

WORKED EXAMPLE
What 3 mm of bleed adds to an A5 page.
BoundaryWidthHeight
Finished trim148 mm210 mm
Added on both sides3 + 3 = 6 mm3 + 3 = 6 mm
Artwork extent with bleed154 mm216 mm

3 mm is about 8.504 PDF points. One eighth of an inch is 3.175 mm, or exactly 9 points; the two values are close but not identical. Enter the amount your printer specifies.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Before you
get started.

The practical details, explained plainly.

Can adding bleed recover artwork that was cropped away?+

No. Edge generation uses content that exists in the PDF; it cannot recover the original missing image. When possible, extend the artwork in the design application and export again.

Should I choose mirror or enlarge?+

Mirror reflects content near the edge and can repeat visible details. Enlarge scales artwork and can move content toward the trim. Inspect both on the actual PDF; neither method suits every design.

Are crop marks the same as bleed?+

No. Crop marks identify the intended cut; bleed supplies artwork beyond that cut. Marks should stay in removable waste and should not contaminate the final piece or a neighbouring design.

Does setting BleedBox create bleed?+

No. BleedBox describes a boundary. The artwork itself still needs to extend into that area. Inspect the page content as well as the dimensions.

Does every printed PDF need bleed?+

No. A design with intentional white margins may not need edge bleed. Use the print provider's requirements and the finished design to decide whether an extension is needed.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

Does PDFImpose fit this job?

Repair a finished PDF when the source artwork is unavailable. Compare edge synthesis with a fresh source export before committing to a method.

What to verify

Inspect every repaired edge, small text, trim and bleed boxes. A mirrored edge is not a reconstruction of missing design content.
